Come to Galveston and stitch with Carrie to create this delightful wool appliqué St. Nicholas in a forest setting.

Enjoy the vivid colors and luxurious softness of hand stitching Carrie’s 20” x 26” original wool-on-wool or wool-on-flannel applique project of St. Nicholas and his woodland friends.  Order the kit a month or so before the conference, and all the pieces can be cut out and whip stitched down before you arrive…..that way you can spend your entire class time focused on practicing Carrie’s unique embroidery embellishment techniques that bring St. Nicholas alive with incredible detail and dimension.  It will be finished in plenty of time for the holidays!

Love Letters

Love Letters is a striking multi-media project that explores several techniques for adding detail and sparkle to your projects. On day 1 you will learn to paint beautiful illuminated letters using Tsukineko Inks. On day 2 the focus shifts to needleturn appliqué. We will experiment with various tips and techniques that will take your appliqué skills to the next level. In addition, silk ribbon embroidery as well as traditional hand embroidery will put the finishing details on this stunning quilt. No prior painting or embroidery experience is required.

Choose between blocks from Kathy's award winning quilts. We will be using the new “Apliquick” method of turning edges. It makes turning the edges of small complex pieces soooo EASY!! Learn the steps of layered appliqué to make pre constructed units that can be hand appliquéd to the background. Kathy will teach you how multiple prints add dimension, and form for a more realistic look.  Day two. We will begin the morning with a fabric paint crayon demonstration and how they can be used to add dimension and shading to each element. Kathy will review basic embroidery stitches to add a delightful layer of texture to each scene, along with tips for pictorial quilting.

The language of flowers is a means of communication through the use of
flowers. Meanings have been   attributed to flowers for thousands of years. Victorians often exchanged    small "talking bouquets", called Tussie-Mussies. Learn to make 3-D cherry blossoms and add embroiderystitches to enhance the beauty of this piece. This Tussie-Mussie block makes a wonderful wall hanging, pillow, totebag or gift.

Audubon Cardinals For confident beginner appliqué students. Birds at the feeder are everyones favorite winter scene. This pattern is from Kathy award winning quilt “Audubon’s Christmas.” We will be using the new “Apliquick” method of turning edges. It makes these small complex pieces soooo EASY!! Learn the steps of layered appliqué and become confident in turning your edges. Kathy will teach you how multiple prints add dimension, and form for a more realistic look for your birds. Afternoon Review of hand or machine appliqué stitches. Day two. We will begin the morning with a demonstration of fabric paint crayons and how they can be used to add additional shading to your chosen fabrics. Embroidery will enhance the definition of your birds, and add a delightful layer of texture to the finished quilt. Kathy will review basic embroidery stitches in the afternoon, along with tips for quilting the Audubon blocks.

Kathy has fashioned a fabulous new block just for us at Applique Away on Galveston Bay 2020 and this beautiful Broderie Perse block features her new technique (Broderie Perse-lique™) that is all the rage! She will delight you with her simple, yet masterful way to tame those wonderful fabrics with the large motifs that we all want to incorporate into our applique. What could be more gorgeous than these Bally Hall - Di Ford Hall tropical birds just chirping and flitting and flirting among the breathtaking floral motifs that you will fall in love with. Perfect pink Dupioni silk makes fabulous rose buds and Kathy always brings other fun silk ribbons to play with. This class features a very creative process and is such fun, to boot! Kathy teaches “tried and true”applique methods with her twist and they lend grand results to all confident skill levels. We will focus on the project, while enjoying different applique techniques. The class will work mainly with prepared applique, using Kathy’s favorite applique foundation paper and very simple (and inexpensive) tools of the trade. There will be no limit to what you can applique after this class with Kathy! And this class is a perfect design class with everyone’s project turning out unique. Don’t be scared to jump right in, as Kathy never ends her “demos up close and personal”.

Enjoy your stay at the historic Tremont House with Carrie creating this exquisite wool appliqué design of birds and ornate flowers. Class time will be spent embellishing with embroidery adding interest and dimension to this lovely design.

This is a pieced 3 block design. 

Wool applique on flannel.

Finished size is 21” x 21”.

We will focus on the 12” x 12” block in class.

 

Students will be using at least 10 different embroidery stitches for this project.

Kit fee  is $58.00.

Perle cotton set $32.50 (for the embroidery to be done in class)

wool thread set $24.50 (for the whipstitching to be done prior to class)

 

Elegant Floral is a project of wool appliqué with embroidery.

The finished project consists of 3 blocks which are included in the kit.

 

During class time we will focus on the 12” x 12” block.

Baltimore Bloom

This workshop is a great introduction to Baltimore Album Quilt-making. You will learn the basics of appliqué by first working with the freezer-paper-on-the-bottom method to properly learn the appliqué stitch. Next, you will move on to needleturn appliqué as well as the dimensional technique of ruching. Finally, a reverse buttonhole embroidery stitch will finish up this delightful project. This relaxed workshop is fun for beginning and advanced students alike.

Landscapes

Let’s get you started on the joys of landscape quilting. Discover the secrets that will bring your landscapes alive. Learn to choose fabrics that will create depth and dimension in your composition. Kathy will teach you the method of UNIT appliqué that she uses to construct large landscape quilts. Play with fabric paints, and over dying to create those realistic hi-lights and shadows. Kathy will demonstrate a mix of appliqué techniques! Easy Apliquick turned edges, Machine appliquéd turned edges, Sizing method for turning edges of simple shapes. If you want to turn your edges and machine appliqué them to your background, this can be done after you get home and the technique will be covered in class. Choose the landscape pattern of your choice!
